STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES USED
CHAIN (abbrev. ch)
Yarn over and pull through the loop on hook.
SLIP STITCH (abbrev. sl st)
Insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch and loop on hook.
SINGLE CROCHET (abbrev. sc)
Insert hook in stitch, yarn ove and pull through the stitch (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops on hook at once.
INCREASE (abbrev. inc)
To work an extra stitch, you simply need to work into the same stitch more than once. Work one stitch as normal. Insert hook into same stitch you’ve just worked and complete another st.
INVISIBLE FASTEN OFF
Cut the yarn, leaving about 10 cm of tail. Pull the yarn tail through the last stitch. Thread the needle and insert it under both loops of the second stitch, passing the yarn through. Next, insert the needle into the last stitch through the back loop and pass the yarn through. This creates a false stitch; adjust it by pulling the yarn until it matches the size of the other stitches.
ABBREVIATIONS
- ch — chain
- inc — increase
- sc — single crochet
- slst — slip stich
- st (s) — stitch (es)
- (…) = At the end of each line you’ll find the number of stitches you should have once finished.
- […] x … = When part of the instructions are repeated, they will be enclosed in brackets.
SKILL LEVEL
LEVEL 2 – EASY
If you are looking for a relaxing project, this is what you want. These patterns are very repetitive. They use basic stitches and easy procedures.
WHAT YO NEED
- Crochet hook 3.5 mm (E US), 4.00 mm (G US)
- Yarn needle
- Stitch marker
- Scissors
- Cotton yarn: You can use any type of cotton. The one I used is 50 g and 75 m.
- For each coaster, you will need approximately 5 g of yarn for the base and 6 g for the border.
SIZE
Approx. 10 cm diameter.
TENSION |
Tension is not a critical factor for this design, the most important thing is to find a size and finish that suit your preferences.
YOU WILL LEARN
- To crochet in spiral without joining.
- To make a perfect round circle, not hexagonal.
- To create an invisible fasten off by making a false stitch.
- To finish with a very original star stitch edge.
CROCHETING IN THE ROUND: CIRCLES OR HEXAGONS?
If you’ve ever tried to crochet round pieces, you’ve likely noticed that your circles end up looking like hexagons. But why does this happen?
The Cause of the Problem | Stacked Increases
When increases are crocheted one on top of the other in the same spot round after round, visible lines are created that alter the shape, resulting in those unwanted hexagonal edges. Here’s an example of a typical pattern with stacked increases:
R1 | 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
R2 | [1 inc] x 6. (12)
R3 | [1 inc, 1 sc] x 6. (18)
R4 | [1 inc, 2 sc] x 6. (24)
R5 | [1 inc, 3 sc] x 6. (30)
R 6 | [1 inc, 4 sc] x 6. (36)
R7 | [1 inc, 5 sc] x 6. (42)
The Solution | Alternate Increases
The key to achieving perfect circles is to vary the position of the increases in even rounds, starting from round 4 and keeping them in the same place in odd rounds. To do this, divide the stitches that follow the increase in the even rounds by 2, working half at the beginning and the other half at the end.
For example, we will modify round 6 as follows:
From => V6 (hexagon) | [1 inc, 4 sc] x 6. (36)
To => V6 (circle) | 2 sc, 1 inc, [4 sc, 1 inc] x 5, 2 sc. (36)
With this technique, the increases are distributed differently compared to the previous round, preventing them from stacking and allowing the circle to remain perfectly round.
Here’s an example of a pattern with alternate increases:
R1 | 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
R2 | [1 inc] x 6. (12)
R3 | [1 inc, 1 sc] x 6. (18)
R4 | 1 sc, 1 inc, [2 sc, 1 inc] x 5, 1 sc. (24)
R 5 | [1 inc, 3 sc] x 6. (30)
R6 | 2 sc, 1 inc, [4 sc, 1 inc] x 5, 2 sc. (36)
R7 | [1 inc, 5 sc] x 6. (42)
By applying this technique, your crochet pieces will turn into perfect circles, without marked lines or hexagonal edges. I invite you to crochet a sample, one with stacked increases and another with alternating increases, and see the difference for yourself. This method will also be useful when decreasing stitches, both in closed rounds and in spirals.
Now that you have mastered the technique needed to create perfect circles, we are ready to start crocheting the base of our coaster!

STAR CROCHETING | BASE
NOTES
- The base is worked in a spiral. Use a marker to indicate the beginning of the round.
Working in spiral rounds with 4.00 mm (G US) crochet hook.
To begin| Make a doble magic ring.
R1 | 6 sc into ring, tighten the lp; place marker. (6)
R2 | [1 inc] x 6. (12)
R3 | [1 inc, 1 sc] x 6. (18)
R4 | 1 sc, 1 inc, [2 sc, 1 inc] x 5, 1 sc. (24)
R5 | [1 inc, 3 sc] x 6. (30)
R6 | 2 sc, 1 inc, [4 sc, 1 inc] x 5, 2 sc. (36)
R7 | [1 inc, 5 sc] x 6. (42)
To finish the spiral, crochet 5 slip stitches, cut the yarn leaving about 10 cm of tail, and finish with an invisible closure. Don’t forget to weave in the ends.
If you want a larger size, continue increasing 6 stitches in each round, following the guidelines for alternating increases, until you reach the desired diameter as follows:
R8 | 3 sc, 1 inc, [6 sc, 1 inc] x 5, 3 sc. (48)
R9 | [1 inc, 7 sc] x 6. (54)
R10 | 4 sc, 1 inc, [8 sc, 1 inc] x 5, 4 sc. (60)
R11 | [1 inc, 9 sc] x 6. (66)
EDGE
NOTES
- With a 3.5 mm (E US) hook.
- The edge is crocheted in a single closed round using Star Stitch.
- All stitches are worked through the back loops of the previous round. To prevent the stitches from gaping, insert the hook through both the back loop and the loop right behind it. This ensures a firmer and more even fabric.
Step 1 | First Star Stitch
1. Make a slip knot.
2. Insert hook into a stitch, place the slip knot on hook, and pull it through the stitch.
3. Make 4 chains, starting in the second chain from hook:
- Insert hook, yarn over, and pull through (2 loops on the hook).
- Insert hook in the next chain, yarn over, and pull through (3 loops on hook).
- Insert hook in the next chain, yarn over, and pull through (4 loops on hook).
- Insert hook in the same starting stitch, yarn over, and pull through (5 loops on hook).
- Insert hook in the next stitch, yarn over, and pull through (6 loops on hook).
4. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on hook.
Step 2 | Second Star Stitch
1. Make 2 chains, starting in the second chain from hook:
- Insert hook, yarn over, and pull through (2 loops on hook).
- Insert in the eye of the star, yarn over, and pull through (3 loops on hook).
- Insert in the left leg of the base of the previous star stitch, yarn over, and pull through (4 loops on hook).
- Insert in the base of the previous star stitch, yarn over, and pull through (5 loops on hook).
- Insert in next stitch, yarn over, and pull through (6 loops on hook).
- Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on hook.
Repeat Step 2 until the base is complete.
To finish, cut the yarn leaving about 10 cm of tail, thread the needle, and pull the end through the first star at the height of the third starting chain. Weave in the ends.
