It was in the 1920’s that headbands exploded onto the fashion scene with the Flappers movement. Flappers were young women known for their energetic freedom, embracing a lifestyle viewed by many at the time as outrageous, immoral or downright dangerous. Now considered the first generation of independent American women, flappers pushed barriers in economic, political and sexual freedom for women.
Zelda Fitzgerald was an American novelist, dancer and celebrity, wife of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. She became an icon in the 20’s and was called by her husband as “the first American flapper”. Zelda is an abbreviation of the name Griselda, of German origin that means strong woman.
