“ORION MOBILE” – CROCHET PATTERN BY HILARIA FINA

STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES USED

MAGIC RING
Wrap yarn around two fingers, leaving 7cm long tail. Insert hook right to left under the two rows and pick the strand up (the one that leads to the skein), pulling the yarn back under the two rows, YO and pull through the loop (do not count as first stitch). Keep working the following stitches into the ring. Remove the ring from your fingers and pull the tail end to tight the ring.

CHAIN (ABBREVIATION ch)
YO and pull through loop on hook.

SLIP STITCH (ABBREVIATION: sl st)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.

SINGLE CROCHET (ABBREVIATION: sc)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (2 loops on hook), YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.

DOUBLE CROCHET (ABBREVIATION: dc)
YO, insert hook into the stitch, YO and pull the yarn through the stitch (3 loops on your hook), YO and pull through the first 2 loops on the hook in one go (2 loops remain on the hook), YO again and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the hook.

FRONT POST SINGLE CROCHET (abbrev. FPsc)
Insert hook from front to the back and to the front again around the post (vertical bar), YO, pull the yarn through the stitch (2 loops on the hook) and finish a sc as usual.

CHAIN SPACE (abbrev. ch sp)
To create a stitch within a chain space, just insert your hook into the space/hole/gap (underneath the chain) to make your stitch.

NOTES

  • This pattern is written in US terminology.
  • When you crochet in closed rounds, you will close each round with a slip stitch into the first stitch of the round. The next round starts with one or more initial chain stitches (know as the “turning chains”) to get the right height for the following stitches and follows the same direction as the previous round.

BLOCKING

The blocking technique is the final step for some crochet items or pieces. After washing or wetting the piece, you get final item’s shape by gently stretching or pinning it. Once the piece is dry it will keep that shape.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Foam board (or other surface into which you can safely and firmly push pins: cork and cardboard should work well)
  • Cling wrap
  • Pins (stainless steel)
  • A bowl with water
  • Clear or white school glue
  • A paint brush
STEP 01. BOARD + CLING WRAP
Lay cling wrap over your board to prevent piece from getting stuck to it when the glue-water mixture dries.
    STEP 02. PIECE + WATER
Soak the piece in warm water until fully saturated. Then, remove it from the water bath and gently squeeze the excess water.
STEP 03. MIX GLUE + WATER
I recommend the ratio of 3:1 glue to water (or even glue only) to keep them nice and stiff.
Prepare your glue mixture by combining appropriate amounts of glue and warm water. Glue dissolves into water easier when water is warm.
    STEP 04. PIECE + BOARD + PINS
Lay the piece onto the prepared board, and pin them down into desired shape. Insert your pins at an angle to prevent tension created at the opposite end.
When you have pinned all your pieces, brush each surface with the glue-water mixture until the thread is thoroughly saturated.
Let the pinned pieces dry completely. It may take 8-24 hours.
    Remove pins.
