“OFELIA CROCHET HEADBAND” – CROCHET PATTERN BY HILARIA FINA

También disponible en: Español
AQUÍThe song Ophelia of The Band was included in their Northern Lights – Southern Cross 1975 album. With a style close to New Orleans sound and a character that could certainly be an analogy to Shakespeare’s Ophelia, possibly driven mad by a lover.
Robbie Robertson, lead guitar and main songwriter of The Band, said that was a song that could have been written in the 1930’s, that loves when he writes music that completely ignores time.

INSPIRATION + DESIGN
Learn how to crochet a unique ribbed headband pattern in short rows. Ofelia headband uses slip stitch in the back loop (slst-tbl) and short rows to shape the ends.
The slip stitch in the back loop of this pattern gives stretchy texture to the headband, this together with the smoothy hand feel of the Katia’s merino wool sport, makes this item really delightful to wear. You won’t want to leave home without your Ofelia these cold days. This yarn has a wide range of beautiful colours, I’m sure you’ll make a few.

SKILL LEVEL
LEVEL 3 – INTERMEDIATE
If you are looking for a new challenge, these projects are just for you! These patterns use a variety of crochet techniques and stitch combinations. They are more demanding and require more detail and concentration along with advanced shaping and stitching.
SPECIAL TECHNIQUES| SHORTS ROWS
It is a technique that consists of crocheting only a part of the stitches in a row, leaving a certain number of stitches (indicated in pattern) without crocheting. These stitches that we left without crocheting will be worked again until we have the same number of stitches as in the initial row. For this, the stitch markers play a fundamental role, since they are of great help to indicate the specific place where we must insert the crochet hook to connect the rows in order to avoid gaps in the fabric.

CONNECT SHORT ODD ROWS
Step 1. Insert crochet hook through the turning chains (previously marked) and through back loop of first unworked stitch.
Step 2. Yarn over.
Step 3. Pull through the 3 loops on the hook in one go.
To connect one short row: in the step 1 insert crochet hook through one turning chain instead of two.

CONNECT SHORT EVEN ROWS
When connecting the even rows, we will bring the yarn to the front of the piece before inserting the hook through the turning chains. This way connections will be almost invisible by the right side of the work.
The remaining steps are the same than in the odd rows.

NOTES
- This pattern is written in US terminology.
- Headband is worked flat from side to side, in one piece, going back and forth rows.
- To create a knit-like look we will work in slip stitch through the back loop (slst-tbl).
- Take care to not work sl sts too tightly.
- Finally, we’ll complete the headband with an invisible seam.

FINISHED | INVISIBLE SEAM STEP BY STEP
Finish your headband by sewing the ends together.
In order to join the headband we will make an invisible seam imitating the already crocheted stitches, at the same time we get a strong and resistant seam.

Right side facing up. Thread the long tail.

Insert needle under both “legs” of the first st.

Pass the needle under the second “leg” of the first st and under the first “leg” of second st.

Insert needle under both “legs” of the next st.

Pass the needle under the second “leg” of the second st and under the first “leg” of next st.

Insert needle under both “legs” of the next st.

Repeat steps until your seam is complete.

Invisible seam is finished.
Weave in all ends.
