“MATILDA BAG” – CROCHET PATTERN BY HILARIA FINA

También disponible en: Español

Since ancient times, fishermen have been aware of the surprising capacity of the woven rope structure to withstand enormous loads, as they daily hoist literally tons of wet fish. The story goes that in the 19th century, in Normandy, France, this same material began to be used to make bags and thus transport goods back and forth to the market.

Matilda, just like the Normans, is a name of Nordic origin that means ‘strong person’.

BEFORE STARTING…

This pattern will allow you to create a unique and functional bag in two steps:

  • In the first step, you will crochet back and forth to make the body of the bag in mesh stitch and the upper edges in single crochet.
  • In the second step, you will crochet in spiral to create the straps and shape the bag by gathering the sides.

This combination of techniques allows for a smoother crocheting process and achieves a flawless result, with no sewing required.

The best part is that you can easily adjust the size of the bag and the length of the straps according to your preferences.

Use drawstring bags inside the bag, in different colors, plain or patterned. They are super useful for securely carrying your crocheting project or essentials. Plus, you can match them with your look for any occasion.

Get to work and create a bag that will be the envy of everyone!

STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES USED

CHAIN (abbrev. ch)
YO and pull through the loop on hook.

SINGLE CROCHET (abbrev. sc)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull up loop (2 loops on hook), YO again and pull through both loops on hook.

DOUBLE CROCHET (abbrev. dc)
YO, insert hook in stitch, YO and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through the first 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook), YO again and pull through the remaining 2 loops on hook.

CROCHETING INTO THE BACK BUMP OF A CHAIN
Usually you crochet in the right side of the chain. When you turn your chain, you’ll see a small ‘bump’ on the wrong side of each stitch.

CHAIN SPACE (abbrev. ch sp)
To create a stitch within a chain space, just insert your hook into the space/hole/gap (underneath the chain) to make your stitch.

INVISIBLE FASTEN OFF
Cut yarn, pull yarn tail through last stitch made and thread tail through yarn needle. Insert needle under both loops at the top of the second stitch of the round and pull yarn through. Then, insert needle through back loop of the last stitch made and pull yarn tail through. You’ve created a false stitch, tighten it by pulling on the yarn tail until it mimics the size of your other stitches.
