STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES USED

MAGIC RING
Wrap yarn around two fingers, leaving 7cm long tail. Insert hook right to left under the two rows and pick the strand up (the one that leads to the skein), pulling the yarn back under the two rows, YO and pull through the loop (do not count as first stitch). Keep working the following stitches into the ring. Remove the ring from your fingers and pull the tail end to tight the ring.

SLIP KNOT
With about 15 cm of yarn, make a loop. Insert your hook through the center of the loop, draw the end of the yarn through the loop, and pull on the tail to tighten.

SINGLE CROCHET (ABBREVIATION: sc)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (2 loops on hook), YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.

HALF DOUBLE CROCHET (ABBREVIATION: hdc)
YO, insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through all 3 loops on hook at once.

INCREASE (ABBREVIATION: inc)
To work an extra stitch, you simply need to work into the same stitch more than once. Work one stitch as normal. Insert hook into same stitch you’ve just worked and complete another st.

INVISIBLE FASTEN OFF
Cut yarn, pull the yarn tail through the last stitch completely and thread yarn tail onto yarn/tapestry needle. Skip one stitch then insert needle into the next stitch under booth loops of the second stitch of the last round. Next, insert needle back into the same stitch that the yarn tail is coming from but into the back loop only. This creates a closing stitch. Weave tail into wrong side before trimming.

JOIN YARN WITH A STANDING SC
Make a slip knot onto hook then insert hook into indicated stitch, YO and pull through stitch (2 loops on hook), YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.

JOIN YARN WITH STANDING HDC
Make a slip knot onto hook then YO, insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through all 3 loops on hook at once.

BACK LOOP ONLY (ABBREVIATION: BLO)
The back loop is furthest away from you. If the crochet pattern says to work through back loop only (e.g. BLO), you will work into this back loop only.

FRONT LOOP ONLY (ABBREVIATION: FLO)
The front loop is the loop closest to you. If the crochet pattern says to work through front loop only (e.g. FLO), you will work your stitches just into this front loop.

SKILL 2 – EASY

If you are looking for a relaxing project, this is what you want. These patterns are very repetitive. They use basic stitches and easy procedures.

WHAT YOU NEED

• Crochet hook 3.5 mm (E US)
• Yarn Needle
• Stitch marker
• Scissors
• Pins
• A piece of thick cardboard or plastic for the pulp
• Fiberfill for stuffing 
• Yarn: 8 ply / DK / light worsted

Drops Muskat (100% mercerized cotton), 50g/1.8oz, 100m (109yds), 10 x 10 cm = 21 sts x 28 rows :
nº 18 (white); 1 skein
nº 30 (vainilla yellow); 1 skein

SIZE

• Using light worsted yarn the amigurumi will turn out a height of approx. 6.5 cm.
• Choose a different yarn weight with the corresponding crochet hook size to make a giant or teeny-tiny version.

NOTES

• This pattern is written in US terminology.
• In some parts “only back loop” (BLO) or “only front loop” (FLO) will be indicated.
• When you crochet spiral rounds, you start with an adjustable ring (know as “magic ring”) and you will go on work in a continuos spiral. This means, you continue to crochet directly into the first stitch of the previous round to star the next round. 
• You should mark the first stitch of the round to keep track of where the round begins.
• When you crochet in closed rounds, you will close each round with a slip stitch into the first stitch of the round. The next round starts with one or more initial chain stitches (know as the “turning chains”) to get the right height for the following stitches and follows the same direction as the previous round.

Crochet in spiral with 3.5 mm (E US) crochet hook, in vainilla yarn.

To begin: Make a magic ring.

Rnd 01. 6sc into ring, tighten the lp; place marker. (6)

Rnd 02.  sc in each st around. (6)

Cut the yarn, leaving a very long tail for sewing and fasten off invisibly (see Stitches & Techniques used).

PULP

Crochet in closed rounds with 3.5 mm (E US) crochet hook, in white yarn.

To begin: Make a magic ring.

Rnd 01. 5sc into ring, tighten the lp. (5)

Cut the yarn and make an invisible fasten off (see Stitches & Techniques used). 

Weave in the ends.

Rnd 02. Join white with standing sc into the closing stitch, [sc-inc] x 5. (10)  

Cut the yarn and make an invisible fasten off. Weave in the ends.

Rnd 03. Join yellow with standing hdc into the closing stitch, BLO; [hdc, hdc-inc] x 5. (15)

Cut the yarn and make an invisible fasten off. 

Weave in the ends.

Rnd 04. Join yellow with standing hdc into the closing stitch, [hdc-inc] x 15. (30)

Cut the yarn and make an invisible fasten off. 

Weave in the ends.

Rnd 05. Join yellow with standing hdc into the closing stitch, [2hdc, hdc-inc] x 10. (40)

Cut the yarn and make an invisible fasten off. 

Weave in the ends.

Rnd 06. Join white with standing sc into the closing stitch,19sc, sc-inc, 19sc, sc-inc. (42)

Cut the yarn, leaving a very long tail to make segments and make an invisible fasten off (see Stitches & Techniques used).

ASSEMBLY

STEP 01. EMBROIDERY

Use the extra white tail to embroider pulp segments through sc of round 6 and through  FLO of round 02. 

Make 10 segments.

Cut the yarn and weave in all ends.

STEP 02. CARDBOARD

To give a nice shape to the lemon, cut a disc slightly smaller than the size of the pulp so it will fit tightly.

STEP 03. BLOCKING (PULP)

The blocking technique is a finish step for some crochet items or pieces. After washing or wetting the piece, you achieve final item’s proper shape by gently stretching or pinning it. Once the piece is dry it will remain in that shape. You could do blocking by ironing the item or you can use stiffening solution to make item stiff or more structured.  I never use stiffer, due that raw material will loose its touch and natural texture. Hand feel is for me an essential part of  the final product beauty. 

You should follow the following steps when you just wish to water block the item (and not to starch it). 

• If you need to wash the item,  do it hand wash,  using cold water and a bit of soap (to dry it off you must not wring the item, use a towel to remove water out)
• If you need no wash, you can can simply use a water spray to dampen it.
• Once is wet, spread the item with the right side up on a flat surface where you can pin (cork, wood, padded surface..), and let it naturally dry.

STEP 04. SEW  PULP AND BASE

Sew the base on to the pulp through the back bump (see Stitches & Techniques used).

When you have reached halfway, insert your piece of cardboard. So that, lemon face will remain flat and neat.

Keep sewing to the end.

Cut the yarn and weave in all ends.
