THE INSPIRATION + DESIGN
The Waistcoat Stitch is a popular stitch which is often referred to as “Knit Stitch” because it resembles the Knit stitches (Stockinette Stitch). It’s a variation on the standard single crochet (in US terms).
Learning how to crochet waistcoat stitch is quick and easy. It works best in the round and closely resembles stocking stitch produced by knitting (stockinette in US terms).
It is a very dense fabric unlike the stitches in knitting, it’s a great stitch for home decor such as baskets. If you love the look of knit stockinette, but prefer to crochet, you’ll love this project.

STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES USED
MAGIC RING
Wrap yarn around two fingers, leaving 7cm long tail. Insert hook right to left under the two rows and pick the strand up (the one that leads to the skein), pulling the yarn back under the two rows, YO and pull through the loop (do not count as first stitch). Keep working the following stitches into the ring. Remove the ring from your fingers and pull the tail end to tight the ring.
SLIP STITCH (ABBREVIATION: sl st)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.
SINGLE CROCHET (abbrev. sc)
Insert hook into the stitch, YO and pull the yarn through the stitch (2 loops on your hook), YO again and pull through both loops on the hook in one go.
WAISTCOAT (abbrev. wst)
Insert hook into between the “V” of the single crochet, YO and pull the yarn through the stitch (2 loops on your hook), YO again and pull through both loops on the hook in one go.
INCREASE (ABBREVIATION: inc)
To work an extra stitch, you simply need to work into the same stitch more than once. Work one stitch as normal. Insert hook into same stitch you’ve just worked and complete another st.
THRID LOOP (ABBREVIATION: 3rd lp)
Locate the 3rd lp of the next stitch
below. Turn the work so you can see the back of the fabric. Locate the top two loops of the next stitch – these are the front and back loops. Just below the back loop is another horizontal strand of yarn – this is the 3rd loop.
CHANGING TO A NEW COLOR
You will change to another colour by joining in the new colour during the final step of the last stitch in the old colour as follows: work the last stitch in the old colour until the last two loops of the stitch are on the hook, then using the new colour, YO and pull through the 2 remaining old colored loops on your hook. The next stitch you make will be the first stitch in the new colour.
INVISIBLE FASTEN OFF
Cut yarn, pull the yarn tail through the last stitch completely and thread yarn tail onto yarn/tapestry needle. Skip one stitch then insert needle into the next stitch under booth loops of the second stitch of the last round. Next, insert needle back into the same stitch that the yarn tail is coming from but into the back loop only. This creates a closing stitch. Weave tail into wrong side before trimming.

NOTES
- This pattern is written in US terminology.
- This pattern is worked top -bottom.
- When you crochet spiral rounds, you start with an adjustable ring (know as “magic ring”) and you will go on work in a continuos spiral. This means, you continue to crochet directly into the first stitch of the previous round to star the next round.
- You should mark the first stitch of the round to keep track of where the round begins.
- When changing colors, do not cut the thread and carry it along on the back.
