“BRIGIDA SHAWL” – CROCHET PATTERN BY HILARIA FINA

También disponible en: Español

In the Irish mythology, Brigid has two sisters, also named as Brigid. She is considered a classic Celtic goddess of fire. She was born with a fire flame on top of the head that connected her to the Universe. She is the Celtic goddess of the inspiration and has several powers coming from inspiration, the art of healing and fortune telling. She was associated to the permanent sacred flames.

STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES USED

SLIP KNOT
With about 15 cm of yarn, make a loop. Insert your hook through the center of the loop, draw the end of the yarn through the loop, and pull on the tail to tighten.

CHAIN (abbrev. ch)
YO and pull through loop on hook.

SLIP STITCH (abbrev. sl st)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.

HALF DOUBLE CROCHET (abbrev. hdc)
YO, insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through all 3 loops on hook at once.

DOUBLE CROCHET (abbrev. dc)
YO, insert hook into the stitch, YO and pull the yarn through the stitch (3 loops on your hook), YO and pull through the first 2 loops on the hook in one go (2 loops remain on the hook), YO again and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the hook.

JOIN YARN WITH STANDING HDC
Make a slip knot onto hook then YO, insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through all 3 loops on hook at once.

BEAD STITCH
The bead stitch is worked in two parts. First, you half double crochet, then you work a puff stitch around the half double crochet you just made. It might sound confusing, but it is really easy once you learn how!

PUFF STITCH (abbrev. PS)
Puffs are a number of elongated stitches worked into the same stitch and then finished together. YO, insert around the stitch, pull a loop through the stitch and then pull it up to the height of all other stitches in the row. Once the desired number of half finished stitches have been completed, YO and pull through all loops on hook to complete the Puff.

CHANGING TO A NEW COLOR
You will change to another colour by joining in the new colour during the final step of the last stitch in the old colour as follows: work the last stitch in the old colour until the last two loops of the stitch are on the hook, then using the new colour, YO and pull through the 2 remaining old colored loops on your hook. The next stitch you make will be the first stitch in the new colour.

INCREASE (abbrev. inc)
To work an extra stitch, you simply need to work into the same stitch more than once. Work one stitch as normal. Insert hook into same stitch you’ve just worked and complete another st.

NOTES

  • This pattern is written in US terminology.
