STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES USED

SLIP KNOT
With about 15 cm of yarn, make a loop. Insert your hook through the center of the loop, draw the end of the yarn through the loop, and pull on the tail to tighten.

CHAIN (abbrev. ch)
YO and pull through the loop on hook.

CHAIN SPACE (abbrev. ch2sp)
To create a stitch within a chain spaces, just insert your hook into the space/hole/gap (underneath the chains) to make your stitch.

SINGLE CROCHET (abbrev. sc)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull up loop (2 loops on your hook), YO again and pull through both loops on hook.

DOUBLE CROCHET (abbrev. dc)
YO, insert hook in stitch, YO and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through the first 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook), YO again and pull through the remaining 2 loops on hook.

CROCHETING INTO THE BACK BUMP OF A CHAIN
Usually you crochet in the right side of the chain. When you turn your chain, you’ll see a small ‘bump’ on the wrong side of each stitch.

FRONT POST DOUBLE CROCHET (abbrev. FPdc)
YO, insert hook from front to the back and to the front again around the post (vertical bar), YO, pull the yarn through the stitch (3 loops on hook) and finish a double crochet as usual.

START CROCHETING | BRICK STITCH

  • Turning chain at the beginning of row does not count as a stitch.
  • Number of rows in pattern repeat : 2.

To begin | multiple 3  + 1 + 1 turning chain.

R1 | Starting in 2nd ch through back bumps, 1 sc, [2 ch, sk 2 ch, 1 sc in next ch] repeat to end.

R2 | 1 ch, turn, 1 dc, [3 dc in ch2sp, fpdc in next sc] repeat to last ch2sp, 3 dc in last  ch2sp, 1 dc in last sc.

R3 | 1 ch, turn, 1 sc, [2 ch, sk 3 dc, 1 sc in next st] repeat to end.

Repeat R2 and R3 until you reach desired size.

TIP | With this little trick, achieving perfectly straight edges in double crochet is extremely easy! Simply replace the turning chain and the first double crochet at the beginning of each row with a stacked single crochet. Here’s the TUTORIAL⇒
