“BONIFACIO XMAS DECO” – CROCHET PATTERN BY HILARIA FINA
También disponible en: Español
AQUÍSince time immemorial, the tree has been a symbol of fertility and renewal. Ancestral traditions consisted of cutting trees in order to decorate them or to leave presents under. The Christmas tree did not exist as such until Christianity adopted and changed those pagan traditions. Legend states that it was Bonifacio the missionary, in the German region of Hesse, in the VII century, who chopped down an oak where local people made sacrifices during winter solstice. He offered a fir tree instead that represented eternal life, because its leaves are always green and its treetop points to heaven.
INSPIRATION + DESIGN
Christmas is right around the corner and, if anything true is that we must wrap presents. This project will give to your packages a special touch, it is an additional present that could be reused as a Christmas deco.
Leftovers of Merino wool Aran Katia that I’ve used in Flora HERE project were just perfect. On one side, green bottle and maroon are ideal for Christmas. On the other side, yarn softness and thickness gives a smooth and fluffy touch different from the cold cotton, more appropriate for the winter season.
I timed myself and I can crochet a Bonifacio small size in about 25 minutes. They are easy going and you can make as many as you want in your spare time.
The printable PDF contains everything you need: detailed instructions and, as a BONUS, the chart that will guide you step by step to create your own Bonifacio Xmas Deco. It’s perfect if you enjoy crocheting on the couch, during your daily commutes to work, or while on vacation. Plus, you can print it out and take it with you wherever you go, avoiding the use of your device’s screen and keeping it free for your favorite movies, shows, or apps.

STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES USED
CHAIN (abbrev. ch)
YO and pull through loop on hook.
SLIP STITCH (abbrev. sl st)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.
THROUGH BACK LOOP (abbrev. tbl)

CROCHETING INTO THE BACK BUMP OF A CHAIN
Usually you crochet in the right side of the chain. When you turn your chain, you’ll see a small ‘bump’ on the wrong side of each stitch.

NOTES
- This pattern is worked from the bottom up.
- Tree is crocheted flat, in one piece, with rows worked back and forth.
- To achieve a look similar to knitting, we will work slip stitches through the back loop (slst-tbl).
- Crochet the slip stitches loosely to make the work easier and achieve a more even finish.
- Turning chains at the beginning of each row do not count as a stitch.
- Combine rows of increases and decreases to shape the silhouette.
