CROCHET PATTERN by HILARIA FINA
I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me about the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just another lemon tree
I’m turning my head up and down
I’m turning turning turning turning turning around
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree
And I wonder, wonder…
I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me about the blue blue sky
And all that I can see, and all that I can see
and all that I can see
Is just a yellow lemon tree
Fool’s Garden – Lemon Tree
THE INSPIRATION + DESIGN
“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” is a popular saying used to encourage optimism and a positive can-do attitude in the face of adversity or misfortune. Lemons suggest sourness or difficulty in life; making lemonade is turning them into something positive or desirable.
I recently finished crocheting the sweater “Amapola” and so I was looking for a quick and simple project that you can work up in a short time, so here it is Lemon.

STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES USED
Wrap yarn around two fingers, leaving 7cm long tail. Insert hook right to left under the two rows and pick the strand up (the one that leads to the skein), pulling the yarn back under the two rows, YO and pull through the loop (do not count as first stitch). Keep working the following stitches into the ring. Remove the ring from your fingers and pull the tail end to tight the ring.
CHAIN (ABBREVIATION ch)
YO and pull through loop on hook.
SLIP STITCH (ABBREVIATION: sl st)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.
SINGLE CROCHET (ABBREVIATION: sc)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (2 loops on hook), YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.
HALF DOUBLE CROCHET (ABBREVIATION: hdc)
YO, insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through all 3 loops on hook at once.
DOUBLE CROCHET (ABBREVIATION: dc)
YO, insert hook into the stitch, YO and pull the yarn through the stitch (3 loops on your hook), YO and pull through the first 2 loops on the hook in one go (2 loops remain on the hook), YO again and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the hook.
TREBLE CROCHET (ABBREVIATION: tr)
YO twice, insert hook into the stitch, YO and pull the yarn through the stitch (4 loops on the hook),YO and pull through the first 2 loops on the hook (3 loops remain on the hook), YO and pull through the first 2 loops again (2 loops remain on the hook), YO again and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the hook.
INCREASE (ABBREVIATION: inc)
To work an extra stitch, you simply need to work into the same stitch more than once. Work one stitch as normal. Insert hook into same stitch you’ve just worked and complete another st.
Insert hook in the front loop of first stitch and in the front loop of the next stitch (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through the first two loops on hook (2 loops on hook), YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.
CLOSING REMAINING STITCHES (THROUGH THE FRONT LOOPS)
Cut yarn, pull the yarn tail through the last stitch completely and thread yarn tail onto yarn/tapestry needle.
Insert needle through the front loops only of each remaining stitch from outside to inside .
Pull gently to close the gap.
INVISIBLE FASTEN OFF
Cut yarn, pull the yarn tail through the last stitch completely and thread yarn tail onto yarn/tapestry needle. Skip one stitch then insert needle into the next stitch under booth loops of the second stitch of the last round. Next, insert needle back into the same stitch that the yarn tail is coming from but into the back loop only. This creates a closing stitch. Weave tail into wrong side before trimming.
BACK LOOP ONLY (ABBREVIATION: BLO)
Instead of crocheting in the entire stitch which is both loops on the top of the stitch, you only go through one of the loops.
FRONT LOOP ONLY (ABBREVIATION: FLO)
Instead of crocheting in the entire stitch which is both loops on the top of the stitch you only go through one of the loops.
CROCHETING INTO THE BACK BUMP OF A CHAIN
Usually you crochet in the right side of the chain. When you turn your chain, you’ll see a small ‘bump’ on the wrong side of each stitch. Insert your hook under this back bump.
CHANGING TO A NEW COLOR
You will change to another colour by joining in the new colour during the final step of the last stitch in the old colour as follows: work the last stitch in the old colour until the last two loops of the stitch are on the hook, then using the new colour, YO and pull through the 2 remaining old colored loops on your hook. The next stitch you make will be the first stitch in the new colour.
|BLO||back loop only|
|FLO||2 front double crochet|

|-inc||increase (crochet 2 stitches into the same stitch, example: sc-inc)|
|lp (s)||loop (s) crochet|

LEVEL 2: EASY
WHAT YOU NEED
- Crochet hook 3.5 mm (E US)
- Yarn needle
- Stitch marker
- Fiberfill for stuffing
- Yarn: 8 ply / DK / light worsted
Drops Muskat (100% mercerized cotton), 50g/1.8oz, 100m (109yds),
10 x 10 cm = 21 sts x 28 rows :
nº 30 (vainilla yellow); 1 skein
nº 16 (light green); 1 skein
Using light worsted yarn the amigurumi will turn out a height of approx. 12.5 cm. Choose a different yarn weight with the corresponding crochet hook size to make a giant or teeny-tiny version.
- This pattern is written in US terminology.
- In some parts “only back loop” (BLO) or “only front loop” (FLO) will be indicated.
- When you crochet in rows, each row stars by turning the piece and working some chain stitches (know as the “turning chains”) to get the right height for the following stitches.
- When you crochet spiral rounds, you start with an adjustable ring (know as “magic ring”) and you will go on work in a continuos spiral. This means, you continue to crochet directly into the first stitch of the previous round to star the next round.
- You should mark the first stitch of the round to keep track of where the round begins.
