Poppy, beautiful poppy
Your soul will always be
Only yours
I love you, loved girl of mine
Just like the flower loves daylight

Poppy, beautiful poppy
Don’t be so ungrateful
Look at me

Field of Poppies

INSPIRATION + DESIGN

There are landscapes that remain in memory … large fields full of poppies that cover the horizon in red. I don’t know what those wildflowers have that makes them especially attractive.

The poppy sweater can be used during the spring and summer months. It is crocheted with Cotton-Yak. The blend of cotton, wool and yak gives freshness and softness to between season sweaters.

STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES USED

SLIP KNOT
With about 15 cm of yarn, make a loop. Insert your hook through the center of the loop, draw the end of the yarn through the loop, and pull on the tail to tighten.

CHAIN (ABBREVIATION ch)
YO and pull through loop on hook.

SLIP STITCH (ABBREVIATION: sl st)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.

SINGLE CROCHET (ABBREVIATION: sc)
Insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (2 loops on hook), YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.

HALF DOUBLE CROCHET (ABBREVIATION: hdc)
YO, insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through all 3 loops on hook at once.

DOUBLE CROCHET (ABBREVIATION: dc)
YO, insert hook into the stitch, YO and pull the yarn through the stitch (3 loops on your hook), YO and pull through the first 2 loops on the hook in one go (2 loops remain on the hook), YO again and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the hook.

TWISTED SINGLE CROCHET
To make the twisted single crochet, insert hook into indicated stitch, YO and pull through stitch (2 loops on hook loose), turn the hook counter clockwise (loops remain on hook), YO and pull through both loops.
It can be a little tricky pulling through those loops after the twist, so it’s definitely important to keep both those loops a little bigger than usual before the twist.

INCREASE (ABBREVIATION: inc)
To work an extra stitch, you simply need to work into the same stitch more than once. Work one stitch as normal. Insert hook into same stitch you’ve just worked and complete another st.

INVISIBLE DECREASE
Insert hook in the front loop of first stitch and in the front loop of the next stitch (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through the first two loops on hook (2 loops on hook), YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.

CROCHETING INTO THE BACK BUMP OF A CHAIN
Usually you crochet in the right side of the chain. When you turn your chain, you’ll see a small ‘bump’ on the wrong side of each stitch. Insert your hook under this back bump.

CHANGING TO A NEW COLOR
You will change to another colour by joining in the new colour during the final step of the last stitch in the old colour as follows: work the last stitch in the old colour until the last two loops of the stitch are on the hook, then using the new colour, YO and pull through the 2 remaining old colored loops on your hook. The next stitch you make will be the first stitch in the new colour.

INVISIBLE FASTEN OFF
Cut yarn, pull the yarn tail through the last stitch completely and thread yarn tail onto yarn/tapestry needle. Skip one stitch then insert needle into the next stitch under booth loops of the second stitch of the last round. Next, insert needle back into the same stitch that the yarn tail is coming from but into the back loop only. This creates a closing stitch. Weave tail into wrong side before trimming.

JOIN YARN WITH A STANDING SC
Make a slip knot onto hook then insert hook into indicated stitch, YO and pull through stitch (2 loops on hook), YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.

JOIN YARN WITH STANDING HDC
Make a slip knot onto hook then YO, insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through all 3 loops on hook at once.

JOIN YARN WITH A STANDING DC
Make a slip knot onto hook then YO, insert hook in stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (3 loops on hook), [YO and pull through 2 loops] x 2.

JOIN YARN WITH A STANDING TWISTED SC
Make a slip knot onto hook then insert hook into indicated stitch, YO and pull through stitch (2 loops on hook loose), turn the hook counter clockwise (loops remain on hook), YO and pull through both loops on hook at once.

  • When you crochet in rows, each row stars by turning the piece and working some chain stitches (know as the “turning chains”) to get the right height for the following stitches.
  • When you make a flower carried the unused color on the WS of work without cutting the yarn.
  • The chain at the beginning of rows do not count as a stitch.
  • Sample size L.
